INCLINE TREADMILL WALKING - VS - FLAT TREADMILL RUNNING - This fitness "secret" has been discussed before, but so many people find it helpful, I decided to repeat it for those who missed it. Many people as they pass 35, 40, 45 years old start to complain of knee and lower back pain .... BUT .... they still want to perform cardio on a treadmill. Most often these people RUN on a relatively flat and fast moving belt in order to get their heart rate up to the desired level. The problem? All that pounding from running only compounds their knee and ankle problems. The Solution ? Speed WALKING on a very steep inclined treadmill. The advantages ? 1) No more pounding from running. 2) Walking on the steep incline will allow you to get your heart and breathing rate up a lower speed (ie .. some report that walking 3.0 mph on a steep 15 degree incline has them breathing harder than running 7.0 mph on a flat setting). 3) Walking on a steep incline shifts the focus away from the knees and places emphasis on the butt and calves. Yes - ladies, this is a great way to get a tighter , firmer and rounder rear and shapely legs Give it a try - you will be surprised and pleased.
